March Birthstone: Aquamarine (Alternate: Bloodstone) (Color: Pale Blue)
Named after the Latin words for water and sea, aquamarine reflects the color of tranquil Mediterranean waters. A member of the beryl family, this gemstone varies from light sky blue to blue-green and scores 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale, making it perfect for jewelry. Brazil is the main source, though it’s also found in other countries.
The ancient Romans linked aquamarine to Neptune, god of the sea, and sailors used it as a talisman for safe voyages. Aquamarine’s gift is thought to represent safety, security, and rekindling love in relationships.
Alternate Birthstone: Bloodstone
Bloodstone, a dark green quartz speckled with red, is also linked to March. Named for the legend of Christ’s blood spilling on green jasper, bloodstone has symbolic connections to sacrifice. Mined primarily in India, this stone is often carved into jewelry and beads.
