May Birthstone: Emerald (Color: Vibrant Green)

Emeralds, with their lush green hue, have long been associated with springtime and growth. Often containing tiny natural inclusions, or “jardin” (French for “garden”), these features resemble foliage within the gem. Part of the beryl family, emeralds rank between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale. Although durable, their inclusions can make them prone to breaking if struck.

First mined by the Ancient Egyptians over 2,000 years ago, emeralds were a favorite of Cleopatra, who famously gifted large carved stones to visiting dignitaries. Today, Colombian emeralds are among the most prized, though they’re also found in countries like Brazil, Pakistan, and Russia. Emeralds are believed to symbolize wisdom, patience, and growth—qualities essential to nurturing a long-lasting love.
